Read what the empty List view actually says. In our test, “There are no upcoming events.” with a Latest Past Events section meant nothing upcoming was published; “There were no results found.” appeared when every upcoming event was hidden from listings; and a disabled List view returned a 404. If the page says nothing at all, suspect a cache, theme or script problem. Then compare the List view with the site’s own export for the same dates.
This guide is for one specific symptom: the List view of The Events Calendar (usually /events/list/, or /events/ when List is the default) shows no upcoming events. For missing events in general, start with WordPress events not showing.
What we tested
We set up a clean WordPress 7.1.4 site with the free The Events Calendar 6.18.3.1 and the default Twenty Twenty-Five theme, created eight labelled test events (upcoming, past, draft, hidden, in progress, in a category, and 60 days out), and recorded what each public surface returned as we changed one thing at a time:
| What we changed | List view | Month view | ?ical=1 export |
REST API |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nothing (baseline) | Upcoming and in-progress events | This month’s events, including earlier days | Same events as List | Same events as List |
| One event set to Hide From Event Listings | Event missing | Event missing | Event missing | Event missing |
| Every upcoming event hidden | Empty: “There were no results found.” | Showed the hidden events until caches cleared (see note) | Empty response, 0 bytes | total: 0 |
| Only past events published | “There are no upcoming events.” and a Latest Past Events section | Past event shown | Empty response, 0 bytes | total: 0 |
| List view disabled in settings | /events/list/ returned 404 |
Normal | 0 bytes | n/a |
| Plugin’s REST routes blocked (403) | First page rendered normally | First page rendered normally | Normal | 403 |
Every one of those pages returned HTTP 200 except the disabled view. A blank events list is a normal-looking page to an uptime monitor.
Read the message on the page
Open the List view in a private window, logged out, and read exactly what it says. In our tests each cause produced a different page:
- “There are no upcoming events.” with a Latest Past Events section: the plugin found no published, listable events from now on. The documentation says this section shows three past events by default. Treat this as a source problem and go to the next step.
- “There were no results found.”: we saw this when upcoming events existed but every one was hidden from listings. It can also follow a search or filter, so check the address for a keyword or date.
- A 404 at
/events/list/: the List view is switched off. Re-enable it under Events → Settings → Display and save. (The documentation describes a redirect with?tribe_redirected=1for disabled views; in our test of 6.18.3.1 the address returned 404 instead.) - No message and no events, or a broken layout: the plugin’s output isn’t reaching the page. Suspect page caching, the theme’s template or a script error before the data. See WordPress events not showing.
Check the dates the view is showing
List view starts from now and works forwards. The documentation says calendar views show ongoing events after their start time, and our three-day test festival, already in progress, appeared in the List view as expected.
Check the address and the date bar for anything moving the window: a tribe-bar-date value in the address, eventDisplay=past, or a category path such as /events/category/workshops/list/. A category list shows only that category. Our category list showed one event while the main list showed five.
Check the events are published and listable
In the admin, open Events and filter by date for the coming month. For each event that should appear, check:
- Status is Published. Our draft test event appeared nowhere public: not the List view, the export or the REST API.
- Hide From Event Listings is not ticked (in the event’s Event Options). The knowledgebase describes it as keeping an event out of listings while it stays reachable by direct link. In our test it removed the event from the List view, the Month view, the export and the REST API, so a hidden event won’t show up in the export as a clue either.
- The start and end dates are right, including the year.
Use the export and REST API as clues
The plugin’s own export and REST API run the same kind of query as the List view, without your theme. Compare them with the page:
curl -sS -o list.ics -w '%{http_code} %{content_type} %{size_download} bytes\n' \
"https://example.org/events/list/?ical=1"
curl -sS "https://example.org/wp-json/tribe/events/v1/events?per_page=5" | grep -o '"total":[0-9]*' - The export has events (check it with the ICS event checker) but the page shows none: the data is there, so the problem is the page, through caching, the theme or a conflict.
- The export is 0 bytes and the REST total is 0: in our test that is what “nothing listable” looked like. The plugin returned an empty response, not an empty calendar file. Go back to the previous step.
- The REST call returns 403: something is blocking the plugin’s API. In our test, blocking it didn’t empty the first page of the List view, but the documentation says the views need the REST API, and moving between pages or views depends on it. Look at security plugins and firewall rules.
Compare with Month view
Month view shows the whole month, including days already gone, so it often has events the List view doesn’t. That alone isn’t a fault. If Month view shows upcoming events that the List view doesn’t, work through Events in Month view but not List view.
Test for a conflict, safely
If the export has events and the page doesn’t, test the theme and other plugins. The Events Calendar’s conflict-testing article recommends a staging site: switch to a default theme, deactivate other plugins, then bring them back one at a time (or in halves). Don’t do that on a busy production site. The Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin can do it for your session only, though the knowledgebase warns that settings changed during a Health Check session also change the live site.
Summary
| What you see | Most likely | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| “There are no upcoming events.” and Latest Past Events | Nothing upcoming published or listable | Event status and dates; ICS file has no upcoming events |
| “There were no results found.” | Events hidden, or a filter or search in the address | Hide From Event Listings; the address |
404 at /events/list/ |
List view disabled | Events → Settings → Display |
| Export has events, page empty | Cache, theme or conflict | Logged-out view, cache purge, conflict test |
| Month has upcoming events List doesn’t | View-specific difference | Month vs List |
When a one-off check isn’t enough
A list that is empty today can be fine tomorrow, and the reverse. If you look after several client calendars, record what you checked, when, and the export’s event count, so the next person can tell whether something changed. That comparison of source and page, repeated, is what we are piloting with agencies.
Limitations of this guide
- Tested on one clean install of the free plugin with a default theme. Events Calendar Pro, custom templates, page builders and caching layers can behave differently, and recurring events (a Pro feature) weren’t tested.
- Message wording and status codes are from version 6.18.3.1 and may change between versions.
- Setting names come from The Events Calendar’s documentation at the verification date above.
