Month view and List view ask different questions. Month view shows the whole month, including days already gone; List view starts from now and shows a fixed number of events per page. So past events this month, and upcoming events on a later List page, are normal differences. If Month view shows an upcoming event that List view doesn’t, check the List address for a category or date filter, then suspect a stale Month view cache.
Someone reports that an event is “on the calendar but not in the list”. Before treating that as a fault, it helps to know that The Events Calendar’s Month and List views are built to show different sets of events. Most differences are by design; a few are real problems. If the List view is completely empty, start with The Events Calendar List view empty? instead.
What each view shows
| Month view | List view | |
|---|---|---|
| Time span | The whole calendar month, including past days | From now forwards |
| Past events this month | Shown | Not shown (except under Latest Past Events when nothing is upcoming) |
| Events in progress | Shown | Shown |
| How many | Up to “Month view events per day” per day cell (default 3); the documentation says -1 shows all |
“Number of events to show per page”, then further pages |
| Events next month | Only after moving to next month | Shown, in date order |
Both settings are under Events → Settings → Display → Calendar Display, according to The Events Calendar’s documentation.
We checked these differences on a clean test install (WordPress 7.1.4, The Events Calendar 6.18.3.1, default theme). An event five days earlier in the month appeared in Month view but not in List view; an event 60 days ahead appeared in List view but not in this month’s Month view; and a three-day festival already in progress appeared in both.
Check the date of the missing event
Look at the event the person expected to see in the list. If it has already finished, the List view is right to leave it out. If it is today, check its end time: List view keeps an event while it is in progress, not after it ends.
Look past the first page of the list
List view shows a fixed number of events per page. With the setting at 2 in our test, an event that Month view showed on the 17th was on page two of the list. On a busy calendar the next page link is easy to miss. Check the setting, or page forward, before going further.
Check the list address for a filter
A list address can be filtered by category or date: for example /events/category/workshops/list/ shows only that category, and a tribe-bar-date value in the address starts the list on another day. If the link someone used came from a filtered page, the event may be in another category. Open the unfiltered /events/list/ and look again.
Check Hide From Event Listings
An event with Hide From Event Listings ticked is kept out of listings and stays reachable by direct link, according to the knowledgebase. In our test of 6.18.3.1 the hidden event was missing from both views, the export and the REST API, so this setting doesn’t usually explain a difference between the two views. It can, however, if Month view is out of date (next step).
Rule out a stale Month view
Month view can be cached separately from the rest of the calendar. The Events Calendar’s caching article describes a Month View Cache that stores Month view HTML for up to a day, and recommends short cache lifetimes for /events* pages.
We reproduced a stale Month view. When we set Hide From Event Listings by writing directly to the database, rather than by saving the event, List view updated straight away but Month view kept showing four hidden events until we cleared the site’s transients (WordPress’s temporary cached data). When we hid an event by saving it normally, both views updated immediately.
So a stale Month view is most likely after changes that don’t go through a normal save: bulk-edit tools, imports, custom code, or database changes during a migration. To test it:
- turn the Month View Cache setting off and on again (its location is under Events → Settings; the caching article places it under General → Viewing);
- purge the page cache and any CDN for
/events/pages; - reload Month view logged out, in a private window.
If the event disappears from Month view after clearing caches, Month view was showing old data, and the List view was right.
Compare a third view
If none of the above explains it, check the same date in Day view and through the REST API (/wp-json/tribe/events/v1/events). When two views agree and one doesn’t, the odd one out is the problem. There are public reports of view-specific bugs: in one WordPress.org support thread, Day view showed no events for a recurring event’s occurrence that Month view, List view and the REST API all showed. Report a reproducible case like that to the plugin’s support with the version numbers.
Summary
| What you found | Verdict |
|---|---|
| The event is earlier this month | Normal: List view starts from now |
| The event is on a later list page | Normal: page forward or raise events per page |
| The list address is filtered | Not a fault: use the unfiltered list |
| Month view stops showing it after caches are cleared | Stale Month view; the list was right |
| Only one view disagrees with the others and the REST API | Possible view-specific bug: reproduce and report it |
Limitations of this guide
- Tested on one clean install of the free plugin with a default theme. Events Calendar Pro (including recurring events), custom templates and caching plugins weren’t tested.
- Our stale Month view came from a direct database change. Our normal saves were made with WP-CLI, which runs WordPress’s usual save process; we didn’t test the block editor screen itself.
- Setting names come from The Events Calendar’s documentation at the verification date above and may change between versions.
